Inspidere BV was the first company to develop a spider silk based composite material. An in vitro grown human skin reinforced with synthetic spider silk produced by genetically modified goats, capable of stopping bullets. This material made headlines all over the world and formed the basis for the synthetic high performance leather alternative.

Mechanically, spider silk is an outstanding material system. The toughness of silk fibers is superior to any of the best synthetic high-performance fibers available today, including Kevlar (Dupont Advanced Fiber Systems).
